The Meander valley in space and time
Petros Mechtidis
Archaeologist and Conservator of Works of Art, Museum of Byzantine Culture, Thessaloniki, Greece
The Maeander valley crosses western Asia Minor from the Phrygian highlands to the Ionian coasts, a few kilometers opposite Samos. Tens of ancient cities and prehistoric sites grew in its banks and in direct relation to it, and they have become important archaeological sites today. During the byzantine era, the valley was the main route for commerce from and to the interior, but a constant entrance for the various invaders too. Touring and sightseeing Maeander’s history in space and time is extremely interesting, from the ancient times to today. It covers hundreds of studies and thousands of pages. Let us consider this short article as an improved/updated version of my first article about the Maeander valley 20 years ago and definitely not a complete study.
Key words: Maeander, Asia Minor, geography, Miletus, Priene, Phrygia
